What's Included

Everything you need, nothing you don't

Every element of the programs we work with exists for one reason: to treat gambling addiction at its roots and help you build a life that makes recovery worth protecting.

  • 12-week structured curriculum, sequenced so each week builds on the last
  • Three group sessions per week: psychoeducation, discussion, and hands-on skills practice
  • Licensed clinicians who specialize in problem gambling and behavioral addiction
  • Secure, private telehealth. Join from any device, anywhere in NY, NJ, OH, or FL
  • A personalized treatment plan: trigger maps, crisis plans, and a full relapse prevention plan you keep
  • Guidance for loved ones, because recovery is stronger with support around it
The Methods

Evidence-based, through and through

The group sessions are structured psychotherapy, built on the approaches with the strongest evidence for gambling addiction:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): identify and rewire the thinking patterns that drive gambling, like the illusion of control and the gambler's fallacy.

Motivational Interviewing: resolve ambivalence and strengthen your own reasons for change, rather than being lectured about ours.

Relapse Prevention: treat relapse as a predictable process you can see coming and interrupt, not a sudden failure.

Practical life skills: money management, financial safeguards, communication, and trust repair.

The Curriculum

The 12-Week Program

The programs we connect you with follow a structured curriculum like this one: twelve weeks, three sessions per week, a complete arc from understanding the addiction to owning your recovery. Tap any week to see what it covers.

01Week

Understanding Gambling Disorder

Know what you're up against

Build foundational insight into gambling disorder as a behavioral addiction: recognized in the DSM-5, formerly called pathological gambling, and running on the same reward machinery as substance use disorders. Understanding its diagnostic features and loss-of-control patterns replaces shame, and becomes the foundation for everything that follows.

  • Session 1What is Gambling Disorder?
  • Session 2The Gambling Cycle
  • Session 3Personal Gambling Timeline
02Week

Triggers & High-Risk Situations

See the setup before it happens

Learn to recognize the emotional, cognitive, and environmental cues that precede urges (payday, boredom, stress, certain people and places) and map the chain from trigger to thought to urge to behavior, so you can anticipate risk instead of being ambushed by it.

  • Session 1Identifying Triggers
  • Session 2High-Risk Situations
  • Session 3Trigger Mapping Exercise
03Week

Urges & Cravings

Ride the wave without acting on it

Urges are temporary, predictable, and manageable, not commands. This week covers the biology and psychology of cravings, then puts evidence-based tools in your hands: urge surfing, delay techniques, and a personalized toolkit of coping strategies you practice in session.

  • Session 1Understanding Urges
  • Session 2Urge Surfing & Delay Techniques
  • Session 3Coping Skills Practice
04Week

Cognitive Distortions in Gambling

Challenge the thinking that keeps you playing

The illusion of control. The gambler's fallacy. Remembering wins and forgetting losses. This week exposes the specific thinking errors compulsive gambling runs on, then teaches cognitive restructuring skills to catch those thoughts and replace them with reality-based alternatives.

  • Session 1Common Gambling Distortions
  • Session 2Thinking Errors & Beliefs
  • Session 3Cognitive Restructuring
05Week

Emotional Regulation

Cope without the escape hatch

For many people, gambling is an escape from stress, boredom, anxiety, or loneliness. Relief that makes everything worse. This week builds emotional awareness and real alternatives: grounding, distress tolerance, and self-soothing skills that work without the fallout.

  • Session 1Gambling as Emotional Escape
  • Session 2Identifying Emotional Triggers
  • Session 3Emotional Coping Skills
06Week

Financial Awareness

Face the numbers, build the safeguards

An honest, judgment-free look at gambling's financial impact (debt, secrecy, derailed goals) paired with practical skills: budgeting basics, transparency, limiting access to cash, self-exclusion programs, and accountability structures that reduce risk while trust rebuilds.

  • Session 1Financial Consequences
  • Session 2Money Management Basics
  • Session 3Financial Safeguards
07Week

Relationships

Repair trust, rebuild connection

Gambling strains the relationships recovery depends on. This week examines the interpersonal damage honestly (broken trust, secrecy, conflict) and builds the skills to repair it: assertive communication, active listening, accountability, and the patient work of rebuilding trust.

  • Session 1Impact on Relationships
  • Session 2Communication Skills
  • Session 3Rebuilding Trust
08Week

Relapse Prevention I

See it coming

Relapse is a gradual, predictable process, not a sudden event. Learn the emotional, mental, and behavioral stages that precede a return to gambling, identify your personal early-warning signs, and build a plan designed to prevent relapse by interrupting the process early.

  • Session 1Relapse as a Process
  • Session 2Warning Signs
  • Session 3Prevention Planning
09Week

Relapse Prevention II

Prepared, not perfect

A slip is not a relapse. How you respond is what matters. This week separates the two, dismantles the all-or-nothing thinking that turns setbacks into spirals, and produces two concrete documents: a crisis plan for high-risk moments and a comprehensive recovery plan.

  • Session 1Slips vs. Relapse
  • Session 2Crisis Planning
  • Session 3Recovery Planning
10Week

Lifestyle Balance

Build a life that competes with gambling

Recovery sticks when life is worth protecting. This week focuses on recovery capital (your strengths, supports, and resources) plus structured routines that reduce idle, high-risk time and meaningful activities that genuinely replace what gambling was providing.

  • Session 1Recovery Capital
  • Session 2Healthy Routine Development
  • Session 3Replacing Gambling
11Week

Values & Motivation

Reconnect with what matters

Lasting change runs on your reasons, not anyone else's. Using motivational enhancement strategies, this week clarifies your core values, works through the ambivalence that's normal in recovery, and sets realistic, meaningful goals that align your behavior with what you actually care about.

  • Session 1Values Clarification
  • Session 2Motivation & Ambivalence
  • Session 3Goal Setting
12Week

Identity & Recovery

Step into who you're becoming

The final week shifts identity from "someone trying not to gamble" to someone grounded in recovery. You'll consolidate sources of meaning and purpose, lock in ongoing supports (Gamblers Anonymous, therapy, accountability systems) and leave with momentum, not just a certificate.

  • Session 1Identity Shift
  • Session 2Meaning & Purpose
  • Session 3Maintaining Momentum

Beyond the Group

Therapy is the core. It isn't the only tool.

Group psychotherapy is the engine of the 12-week model, but effective gambling addiction therapy adapts to the person. Depending on your assessment, the plan can also include individual counseling with a psychologist or other licensed mental health professional, and family therapy when rebuilding trust at home is part of the work.

Compulsive gambling also rarely travels alone. It often co-occurs with other mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD, and treating the whole picture matters. When medication would help, we connect you with psychiatrists and prescribing providers for options such as antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), mood stabilizers when mood symptoms drive the gambling, and opioid antagonists like naltrexone that can blunt the urge itself. Gambling disorder is a treatable mental illness, and treating what surrounds it makes recovery far more durable.

If you'd rather research providers independently, the National Council on Problem Gambling maintains a national directory of certified gambling counselors.

Support Groups

Free peer support, alongside treatment

Support groups aren't a replacement for therapy, but the combination is stronger than either alone, and they're free:

Gamblers Anonymous: 12-step fellowship with in-person and virtual meetings nationwide.

Gam-Anon: meetings for the spouses, family, and friends of problem gamblers.

SMART Recovery: science-based, non-12-step meetings for all addictive behaviors.

Many graduates keep a weekly meeting on the calendar permanently. It's one of the simplest ways to prevent relapse. More options on our Resources page.

Good to Know

The practical details

Is it private?

Yes. Sessions run on a secure, private telehealth platform, and your participation is confidential. What's shared in group stays in group.

Do I need a diagnosis first?

No. If gambling is causing problems in your life, or you're worried it's starting to, that's reason enough to reach out. The consultation and assessment take care of the rest.

What do I need to join?

A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera, a reasonably private space, and residency in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, or Florida. That's it.

What if I'm not sure I'm ready?

Ambivalence is normal. It's literally part of the curriculum (Week 11). You don't have to be certain to have a conversation with us.

What about cost & insurance?

We'll walk through cost and coverage options during your free consultation, before you commit to anything.

What happens after Week 12?

You leave with a relapse prevention plan, a crisis plan, and connections to ongoing supports: support groups like Gamblers Anonymous and Gam-Anon, continued therapy, and the structures that help you prevent relapse for good.
